Allen’s Story

Site created on April 29, 2019

Al had surgery to remove his bladder and one kidney in late January of 2019.  He was hospitalized for 2.5 weeks.  Since then, he's  been at home and has a urostomy bag and has been visited a few times a week by a home health nursing service.

Al is currently being hospitalized at St. Cloud Hospital.  He came in April 19, with a fever and was admitted immediately. He had sepsis and was having heart issues.  The infection is under control, and he was scheduled to have a triple bypass in the morning of Monday, April 29.

However, in the wee hours of the morning before surgery, he was experiencing severe pain on his right side. He had a CT scan and it revealed he had a spontaneous internal bleed. The initial cause of the bleed is unknown, but it was likely worsened by the fact that he had been on blood thinners in the lead up to his proposed surgery.

Blood thinners have been stopped. He is being given blood and we're keeping an eye on his blood pressure.   We are hoping that the bleeding slows and eventually stops.  Due to his weakened heart and other health factors, he's currently between a rock and a hard place. They stopped blood thinners due to his internal bleeding.  Because they had to stop the blood thinners, he's now at a higher risk of heart attack.

We will update when we can.  It is difficult to respond to individual requests for updates, so please encourage those who are looking for news to check this website. Thank you.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Becky Foster

Dad came home Thursday night. He's in good spirits, but still has a long way to go to recover his strength and endurance.

A home health nurse will be stopping by 3x a week.  He'll start physical therapy at home and when he's strong enough, he'll start attending cardiac rehab at the hospital 2x per week, hopefully sometime during June.

He is keen to get back to strolling the grounds of our luxurious estate and gardening and working with his goldfish ponds.  This will be my last update, if all continues to go well.

If you'd like to stop by the house to visit, please call first, as dad has good days and bad days, but now mostly good days.
