Alicia’s Story

Site created on January 7, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting. Please do not feel that you need to donate to this site nor anything else. CaringBridge is a great way to keep you informed, but they are always implying that a donation is requested by the family—which it is not.

Alicia was informed on January 2nd that there is no further medical treatment possible to control her stage 4 cancer. She is now at The Dawn Greene Hospice at Mary Manning Walsh Home, 1339 York Ave, New York, NY 10021. Her parents, siblings, siblings-in-law and nieces and nephews are spending a great deal of time with her there and she is very comfortable—both mentally and physically and just told Monika that she is extremely happy.

Having visitors is difficult for her, so she is asking that it be limited to those mentioned above. She feels the love and support of her friends and colleagues as well as that of her very large and close-knit extended family. She holds a great deal of love for all of you and sends it to you in her thoughts and best wishes.

A very nice and well-meaning nun with a high-pitched voice greeted Alicia when she first arrived. As most of you know, Alicia is a proudly fallen Catholic, so when she later met the family nurse practitioner in charge of her care, Alicia asked, “Can you keep the nuns away from me?” The FNP readily understood and promised to make that happen.

It is a beautiful and caring hospice home and we were all grateful that they could accommodate Alicia. They even provide cots overnight, which I (Tommy) didn’t realize when I slept on the floor the first night. Alicia’s comment to my siblings the next day was, “I could hear him but I couldn’t see him!” She further said that she was worried that she was in purgatory and was fated to hear my snoring for all eternity.

We all send our love to you and thanks for your concern.
