Journal entry by Jessica Pautz

Hello family and friends near and far.

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we share this news with you all. As many of you know, Al has been battling cancer for the past four and a half years. Yes you read that right. It’s been four and a half long years of chemotherapy, radiation treatments, surgeries, infections and many hospital visits. And through it all Al has been incredibly strong. He has never complained and believe me, has had every right to.

Last week we received devastating news. It has spread once again, but this time to his liver and lungs. Chemotherapy is no longer an option because it is toxic to his body. The prognosis is not good and not one that the boys and I want.

As we left the doctors office, Al turned to Michael and said “I don’t want to see any sad faces.” He is an amazing man and we know these days ahead are going to be extremely difficult for our family. We have always, since his diagnosis, tried to do our very best every day and we will continue to do so.

It is so hard to have Christopher and Daniel far from us, but they were able to come home this weekend and we all enjoyed being together. We even celebrated Michael’s 30th birthday with his friends Saturday night. It was truly special and Al enjoyed seeing everyone. Al’s sister Nancy came last week and my parents are with us now. It’s also hard having family so far away, but God has blessed us with truly great and supportive friends. Friends who are always there and always ready to help.

Last Friday we had hospice come in and they have been a great comfort to us. Last night, we came to the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville because we could not manage Al’s pain at home. He has been resting comfortably and we should be going home in the morning. Everyone here is so caring and we are truly grateful.

I would like to thank everyone who has called, sent text messages, reached out to us and brought over food and especially all those who are praying for us.

I ask you all to please pray for our family. Please pray for strength, for courage and for peace.

Yours Truly,

Luisa Caruso
