Alan Hozan’s Story

Site created on December 29, 2023

Alan went in for a robotic prostatectomy on December 22. The surgery went well, but after Alan returned home there were some complications. He ended up back in the hospital on the 26th for further evaluation. Early Thursday morning he experienced a cardiac arrest, witnessed by Laurie. The nurse there immediately began CPR, however there was an anoxic period during CPR. He was transferred to the ICU immediately.

“Well, we made the shift.”

So said Hozan today, after he was discharged from Kaiser Oakland to a rehab facility in Kentfield.

I talked to Laurie this evening as the family returned from getting Hozan settled in his new surroundings. She spoke of the intensity of landing in a new and unfamiliar place—Where are the light switches? How do you call the nurse?—and positive feelings about starting the next stage in Hozan’s recovery.

This facility is particularly adept at moving at a patient’s own pace. For the time being Hozan has a room to himself, in an environment that feels much less like a hospital. The windows are operable, so he can finally enjoy some fresh air. And, he reported, the water tastes good.
