Adam’s Story

Site created on June 7, 2023

Adam found a lump near his groin area back in February 2023.  We are glad that Adam found the lump while being asymptomatic and looked into medical expertise to diagnose what it was.  Adam graduated high school on May 26, 2023, and on the following Tuesday he had surgery to remove what we thought was a cyst.

Post surgery, the surgeons immediately gave us the bad news they believed the mass was cancerous.  It was about the size of a lime and attached to the soft tissue on the outside of his pelvis.  On June 4th, we had Adam's high school graduation party.   Two days later we received confirmation the tumor was Ewing Sarcoma and would need further treatment.  All further scans show the tumor is localized, in his pelvis.

The treatment plan calls for 34 weeks of Chemotherapy.  He is scheduled to have two-days of inpatient chemo treatments every two weeks, and five-days of inpatient chemo treatments every third round of Chemo.  Sometime in August Adam will go to the Mayo Clinic for six weeks of Proton Beam Radiation.  During our stay in Rochester, Adam will continue his Chemo regimen.

Adam has postponed his plans to attend the University of Nebraska Lincoln in the fall.  We are looking into him taking some online courses while he undergoes treatment.

We are thankful for the care Adam has received at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis and the care he will be receiving at the Mayo Clinic.  We are also blessed with a tremendous support network that has really helped us cope with this detour of Adam's journey.

The port served Adam well, throughout his treatment, but now it's time to say goodbye 👋 GOOD RIDDANCE!!

Before he went into surgery, someone asked Adam “if you could give three pieces of advice to other young adults going thru what you have been thru, what would you say?”

He took a few minutes to think about the question and here is what he said:

1) Always keep a smile on your face.

2) Always listen to your Mom.

3) Build good friendships because your friends will help you get thru the hard times and keep you in check.

I loved that she asked this question and Adam shared his wisdom 💛🎗️💛

As a mom, sometimes I don’t want my kids to grow up. But my views have changed. I am so excited to watch my kids grow. To live another day, months and years. To go to college, get married, have children and enjoy a long life.

When you’ve witnessed your child do everything he’s told to do, to save his life from the cancer beast with no boundaries, your mind begins to wander and wonder how much time?

Throughout our journey, this was an awful way to live but a beautiful way to experience life.

Scans have been scheduled for the last week of June. Until then, I have turned my energy to walking again and hope to complete a walking half marathon in September! I love to walk and I think the marathon is a good resemblance of the past ten months of our lives. But this time, I will be ready.

Forever grateful

♥️, Katie
