Adam’s Story

Site created on July 27, 2019

This page has been created to help convey updates and display Adam's medical recovery. Adam was involved in a head-on motorcycle accident on Wednesday July 24th 2019 at about 8:30pm. He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center Main Trauma Hospital in Charlotte, NC. He survived an accident that seemed unsurvivable. The injury to his left leg is one never seen by the trauma staff at CMC. Journal entries will be added with the most current information (daily) until this begins to slow down. He has a long road to recovery and is estimated not to return home for at least the next year.

His injuries include:
Amputation of the left leg & hip down the center of the sacrum (traumatic hemipelvectomy). All nerves and blood vessels severed and removed from left side of sacrum.
Broken right pelvic bones (superior and inferior pubic ramus)
L1-L5 vertebrae broken
Left arm ulna and radius shattered. Loss of 50% bone. Muscle & tissue removed. Tendons & nerve damaged. (Still awaiting reconstructive surgery)
Broken right wrist

Thank you for all of the best wishes and prayers, I hope Adam will be able to visit this page and update it himself in the future!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Austin Fifield

Hello everyone this is Adam!

I want to start off by thanking everyone that has supported me and my family throughout this journey, financially and emotionally. You all cannot imagine how helpful it is knowing I had everyone's support.

Now for the updates! Since coming home there have been many challenges that have took some time getting used to. Austin has done an amazing job helping me every day and night with medications, personal hygiene, and appointments. My mom has also done a great job helping out on her days off work. One of the biggest struggles I've had is making it to all my appointments. My sitting tolerance has increased significantly but it's still tough because most of my appointments are at the hospital and that is about an hour or more round trip and I've recently had multiple appointments per day. The other challenge I'm struggling with is pain management. None of the medication I'm taking has seemed to reduce the pain enough at night to help me get to sleep. We think we have narrowed the cause of the pain down to a few things but are still experimenting.

PT and OT has been going real well with the rehabilitation and strengthening of my body. I am using my left hand and arm a lot more and have more confidence that I will eventually have full function of my hand and fingers. A couple weeks ago I was finally able to take my first shower since the accident. I have also been using my walker to move around my bedroom. I am still not quite strong enough to feel confident using it without someone on standby in case I fall.

That's pretty much it for the big update. If anyone wants to chat feel free to send me a message on Facebook or shoot me a text. Also, if anyone is in the area please stop by to say hi. I am always in the mood to have visitors.
