Dear Friends,

I'm sad to report (though you may have already heard) that Alan had a downhill slide over the weekend - with fever and confusion - probably an infection, which is somewhat better now, though he remains weak and less communicative. This triggered a decision to engage hospice services. It's comforting to have nurses putting eyes on him in person.

Berkeley Zen Center is in the middle of a seven-day retreat - it's lovely to have that happening around us. I want to share part of a message from BZC's president to our community - I appreciate her sentiments. Below that, I'm again sharing a link to a video of Alan singing Our Hero at Upaya Zen Center several years ago. This surfaced again for me when I shared it with one of our nurses. Hozan Alan in his element...

This morning in sesshin our visiting teacher Greg Fain emphasized that this is the Great Matter. The Matter of Birth and Death. He stated the importance of doing this together, as a Sangha. Hozan is practicing hard right now, and so must we. Greg shared his experience that there is much beauty in this.

This is all we know right now. We are not holding information back. When we know more, we will tell you. And for now, let us all “practice like our head is on fire.” This moment will not come again.

A deep bow to you all for your continuous practice.

Karen

This is just to say that we never know how long our reach is: i googled Hozan Alan because i am a dharma friend of Catherine Cascade: i am moved and touched by Hozan Alan's journey, his words, and the outpouring of love, commitment, and presence i witness here. I have deep gratitude to be able to share this experience, however obliquely. it informs my practice. Thank you.

Dear Hozan, Laurie, Genpo, and Sylvie - sending love and wishes for well-being to you all, and chanting daily for Hozan. May Avalokisteshvara's power support you deeply at this time.

Dear Alan and Laurie, I have been quietly following with love all of your challenges and adventures through this site, and our friends Wendy and Roshi. I haven't visited bc it seemed that you have enough on your plates. But I would be more than happy to come to say hi, listen, and be of any assistance that you can imagine. For the moment sending much love and many blessings.

Dear Alan, Laurie, Sylvie and Genpo--Sending love and heart-felt wishes for your peace and well-being. Alan and Laurie, I have appreciated so much your friendship and your big hearts and generous practice all these years. I have treasured memories of time at Tassajara and City Center with both of you. Thank you for including us in your intimate family life this past year through these messages. It is so inspiring to be able to be with you and follow your progress in this way. Love and bows, Rosalie

I'm sending much love to Alan, Laurie, Genpo, and Silvie. I have kept a photo of Alan and me on sitting together on the wooden bridge over Cabarga Creek at Tassajara, taken many years ago, on my desk, where I see it every day and feel our connection.

Dear Alan and Laurie - you are both so much on my mind and in my thoughts as you have been all year. My deepest gratitude to both of you for the loving community that you have built over many years. May your practice and loving sangha bring you peace now and in the coming days. - Simone

I remember once you said to me that “sometimes we just need to bear it”. I know that came from deep within your own personal experience. Know that you’re held in deep love, compassion, appreciation, and joy for all that you have offered others. Thank you for your wisdom, your generosity and and love of life. May you be in comfort, peace and ease.

Alan and Laurie, I add my love and appreciation to all the others here. Alan, I have not seen you for many years, but your deep practice, great joy, and fearless advocacy for the marginalized and unseen have been the inspiration for so many for so long. I have forever loved you. Here at the cusp of human life we learn the depths of the dharma, the power of impermanence and interbeing to awaken us more deeply to the preciousness of the moment. We all encircle you both, right here with you, holding you in our hearts. Hugs!
