Dear Friends,
I'm sad to report (though you may have already heard) that Alan had a downhill slide over the weekend - with fever and confusion - probably an infection, which is somewhat better now, though he remains weak and less communicative. This triggered a decision to engage hospice services. It's comforting to have nurses putting eyes on him in person.
Berkeley Zen Center is in the middle of a seven-day retreat - it's lovely to have that happening around us. I want to share part of a message from BZC's president to our community - I appreciate her sentiments. Below that, I'm again sharing a link to a video of Alan singing Our Hero at Upaya Zen Center several years ago. This surfaced again for me when I shared it with one of our nurses. Hozan Alan in his element...
This morning in sesshin our visiting teacher Greg Fain emphasized that this is the Great Matter. The Matter of Birth and Death. He stated the importance of doing this together, as a Sangha. Hozan is practicing hard right now, and so must we. Greg shared his experience that there is much beauty in this.
This is all we know right now. We are not holding information back. When we know more, we will tell you. And for now, let us all “practice like our head is on fire.” This moment will not come again.
A deep bow to you all for your continuous practice.
Karen
