March 10th 2021 changed our lives forever! At just 19, Zsai was involved in a head on collision. The high impact collision caused a traumatic brain injury. The type of injury he sustained is called a Diffuse Axonal Injury- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffuse_axonal_injury Zsaimir was in Neuro ICU for 3 days and was on a ventilator 2 of those 3 days. The doctors prepared us for all of the possibilities once being taken off of the ventilator. From not waking up, to waking up and not remembering anything, or even not being able to breathe on his own. Zsaimir woke up and was definitely confused but it became apparent that he did not need to be in the ICU. On day 4 he was transitioned to a regular room to begin his road to recovery.  Zsaimir at times is confused about his ability to walk and move around. Visitors are limited to one at a time due to the pandemic. While the family were changing places to sit with Zsai, he thought he was able to get up and go to the restroom himself and fell. The fall required another CT scan to make sure another injury to his brain did not take place or an injury to anywhere else. The CT scan cleared him of any other injury!  He requires a 1 on 1 patient care technician being in the room 24/7. Redirection is currently required frequently but he is improving physically and mentally daily.  While running routine labs, the doctors discovered his Calcium levels were very high. The doctors ordered an ultrasound to check his parathyroid and discovered he had an adenoma on his lower left parathyroid. Having a parathyroid not function correctly can add to the current symptoms he is having from the brain injury. So the doctors made the decision to order a nuclear medicine scan to confirm that the surgery needed to take place. The surgery was performed on March 20th to remove the adenoma and we are waiting for the results. We are hopeful it will be benign!  Zsai’s current daily tasks are to remember where he is, what day of the week it is, the month and the year. We also have him tell us his date of birth, his full name and why he is in the hospital. Zsaimir has made great progress daily and will continue his success on his next step of his journey. It is with mixed emotion that we have decided to send him to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, NE. Being surrounded by loved ones is a huge part of rehabilitation and Zsai loves his family.  But there aren't any local providers that specialize in TBI. Zsaimir's strength is coming back quickly and will require more cognitive therapy that cannot be provided locally, which is why we have chosen the facility in Nebraska. We need to get him back to the vibrant, outgoing and independent young man he was before. I do have to say he has absolutely not lost any of his personality! He still has a huge heart and a smart mouth!  We need to get Zsai to a point where Community Reintegration is possible! And he can go back to taking care of his family! We appreciate all of your prayers, support and outreach.  Please know it has gotten our family through this very tough time. We love and appreciate you all and will keep you updated here as he progresses. Much love and talk soon!
