Hello to our wonderful community of caring people who love Kora! We’ve created this website in order to keep everyone up to date on Kora’s progress on her medical journey. Kora has a long history of overcoming health obstacles and we have faith she will fight her way through this with the same courage and tenacity of which she has always possessed.
Medical History from Birth:
Kora was born on September 24, 2009 with a rare form of congenital scoliosis, multiple heart defects, lung deformities, and many orthopedic anomalies. She is missing ribs, has partially formed vertebrae and improperly fused vertebrae, as well as a diagnosis of scoliosis. Kora was never expected to leave with us from the NICU. Here we find ourselves, almost 13 years later, and she had not only survived, but thrived given her many physical hardships. Knowing Kora’s sparkling personality and outgoing demeanor, you would never know all she has experienced. She has spent the past 12 years exceeding every medical professionals expectations and we were so close to putting a period at the end of the final chapter of her scoliosis treatments.
Recent devastating complications:
On July 11, Kora came to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford for what was to be her 4th and final surgery to correct her scoliosis. After a seemingly smooth and successful surgery, only hours later, Kora’s life would be changed. But not in the celebratory way we all anticipated.
Kora suffered a spinal stroke during her surgery that has left her about 80% paralyzed. During manipulation of her spine during the placement of the final rods to reinforce the fusion of her back, blood supply was cut off from her spinal cord between her C-4 and C-6 vertebrae, inches below her brain stem. Although she has made some progress over the past 3 weeks, her future mobility and quality of life remain in jeopardy.
This is an absolutely devastating and extremely unexpected complication and we are heartbroken. Kora’s bubbly personality and wry sense of humor remain intact, but she can not move her body below her chest. Our once award winning dancer, sparkly spunky cheerleader, skateboarding, hip hopping, beautiful singer and phenomenal performer may never know life again outside of a wheelchair. We will share her latest updates here. Thank you for supporting our sweet girl’s journey through this heartbreaking and devastating situation.
