We have found ourselves on a new journey in life. Not one that we expected, but one we are going to embrace, grow and learn from. On July 7th, Wayne was diagnosed with Rectal Cancer. Thanks to our dear friend Carolyn, Wayne went in to have a colonoscopy to check out some issues he was having. Things moved pretty fast on that Friday. After finding the cancer, Dr. Gemlo ordered at CT scan and an MRI. They scheduled them both for that evening. By Monday we had the results back and a meeting scheduled for Tuesday with Dr. Gemlo (the surgeon) and Dr. Delaune (the Oncologist) . The CT scan showed a small spot on the liver that they wanted to check further. An MRI of the liver showed it to be a small cyst and nothing of concern. The cancer seems to be contained in the rectum and lymph nodes around it.
The treatment plan that the doctors agreed on is 8 chemo treatments every other week for 4 months. Then a radiation/chemo combined treatment for 4 to 6 weeks every day Monday - Friday. Followed by a 10 week break for things to heal and the tumor to continue to shrink and then they will do surgery to remove the tumor and lymph nodes. It's going to be a long process, but we know that God is standing right beside us the entire way.
The first step was putting a port in his chest to administer chemo treatments through. They did that today (Wednesday, Aug 2nd) and it went very well. Next week, Wednesday, Aug 9th, they will start the chemo treatments.
