Saturday October 27th, 2018 Wanita fell down the stairs at our family cabin in the Brazos. She was supposed to be at a party at 6:00 & hadn't shown up by 6:30 so our friends Carol & Janis went to check on her. They found her semiconcious on the floor with a bloody nose and mouth. They called the party hosts and Dr Mike came down with oxygen and notified the Brazos Canyon Volunteer Fire Department. She was taken to Chama and then flown by helicopter to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque. She arrived there around 10:30 pm and Doug & I were notified by the hospital social worker that she was there. We both rushed to the hospital and we were led to the Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit (TSICU) where the Dr showed us her CAT Scan, and told us she had a very severe intracranial bleed & brain injury and she was not expected to recover. He gave us almost no hope at all for any recovery. At 4am Sunday morning however, things changed! Mom started following commands. So at 7am they took her to the OR to try to get some of the pressure off of her brain. The surgery went very well and she was returned to TSI with a drain in her head, and a piece of skull bone hinged, to allow room for swelling and to prevent further pressure on her brain.
