On Wednesday, February 1st, while in Kansas City helping his sister prepare for her move to Bella Vista, Verl fell backwards down a flight of stairs, knocking himself unconscious and he stopped breathing.  Paramedics were there in minutes while Coleen did chest compressions, and he was admitted to Liberty Hospital in KC.  He suffered two brain bleeds on each side of the brain as well as a severe bruise at the front of the brain.  In critical but stable condition, Verl was put into an induced coma and on a ventilator for several days.   On Friday, Feb 10 a  feeding tube was inserted into his stomach and on Saturday Feb 11 he was moved from ICU to Progressive Care.  Eventually he will be moved to brain trauma rehab before he can be relocated to a facility closer to home.
