Hello family and friends--this is Steph (Dean and Val's daughter) who is creating this site with Mom's permission to help keep everyone updated as she kicks cancer's butt.

The weekend of July 4, 2022, Mom found a mass in her right breast.  The mass is very firm and easily palpable (feel-able from the outside).  She contacted her doctor right away and was then sent for a mammogram and a biopsy a few days later.  On July 14, the pathology results came back and Mom was diagnosed with "invasive moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the breast."  If your first thought is "Wait a minute, isn't squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer?" you'd be correct.  It turns out that there are skin cells inside your milk ducts and though it's a rare type of breast cancer, accounting for less than .1% of all breast cancers, it can be the primary site.

If you're close to our family, you'll know that Landon (Val's grandson) had a rare type of tumor that Tiffany found on 4th of July.  I've reminded Mom that we've got a history of beating rare tumors as Landon has been cancer free for nearly 12 years.

Through all of this, Dad will be Mom's primary doctor-appointment-goer, but Tiff and I will also take turns accompanying them as designated note takers and question askers.   Mom has given her permission for this site to be created and maintained, but isn't sure how active of a role she wants to take.  Tiff and I will do our best to keep things updated!
