On Monday, August 8th, 2016 Tony was in a serious motorcycle accident on the Veterans Expressway. In the first 48 hours he was not given much hope, but God heard our prayers! He was admitted into St.Josephs ICU, heavily sedated , and put on a ventilator and ICP ( intercranial pressure ) to monitor his brain swelling. His shattered left forearm, wrist & hand underwent a reconstructive surgery and skin graft successfully. After only 1 week in ICU, Tonys health declined due to pneumonia & a life-threatening bacteria( MRSA) in his lungs. Through constant prayers & knowledgeable doctors/nurses at St. Josephs, Tony was able to get a tracheostomy on August 26th. Another miracle! He was then stable enough to get his first MRI to diagnose his head trauma. The neurologist refers to his TBI ( traumatic brain injury) as a Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI). This is a sheer injury to the brain from a sudden deceleration which causes the nerve fibers ( axon bundles) to be stretched or torn. The neurologist are hopeful that through intense rehab & time, Tony can overcome his deficits. It will be a long road to recovery. We are just so thankful that his journey did not end that Monday night on the expressway. Currently, Tony is at St. Josephs in a ( SDU) step-down unit , room 527D. His eyes are open, and his ability to focus & track movement improves daily. He is breathing on his own and is responding to some verbal commands. He receives daily physical therapy from staff, family & friends that visit , to exercise his limbs in an attempt to regain strength & mobility. We have been blessed with so many prayers, encouraging visitors, cards & meals, donations & an outpouring of support!! We never imagined the compassion & comfort that has been shown to our family during these past 11 weeks. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! The Rojo family ❤️
