This is the most difficult story I have ever had to write. 52 years ago this week I signed up for a life commitment by taking a vow to love for better or worse and in sickness and health. God is holding me to this vow by constantly testing my strength. Last Saturday started off well with an outing and celebration at our friend's lake home. Tom was on his way down to the lake for a pontoon ride. Unfortunately he lost his balance on the dock and took a nasty fall backwards into the rocky shore line. Because he had a large bleeding goose egg on the back of his head we decided to head for Fargo and have it checked out at the ER. It was about an hours drive to Fargo. He was doing quite well and didn't really think this was a necessary destination. However I kept driving!! We were at the ER about 15 minutes when he was being prepared to have a CT scan to check the head situation. Before he could be taken there he suffered a severe stroke. Within the hour he was in surgery for a craniotomy to relieve the pressure due to the large bleed in his brain.
Surgery went well, but he has not yet awoken. All is going in the right direction with no set backs. He has good neuro functions and he can hear us. It will be a slow and long recovery process. Will continue to keep you all updated through Caring Bridge. The next big step is for Tom to wake up.
