Tom Poynter (Husband, Father, Pop Pop, Brother, Uncle, Friend) is scheduled for knee replacement surgery at St. Vincent Main Hospital, Tuesday, April 19th at 9 a.m. This is a high risk surgery due to health.
Why the surgery? About 18 months ago Tom acquired an infection in the hardware of his current artificial knee. After a hospital stint, he spent 5/6 weeks at Prairie Lakes on daily IV antibiotics. In the meantime, he has been taking long term oral antibiotics to sustain the infection. In November 2015, the infection flared up in his knee again and Tom was placed on daily IV antibiotics for 6 weeks. By Gods grace and family, specifically Patty (his sister, a nurse) and Christi (his daughter), Tom was able to receive the treatment at home daily. After the treatment, Tom was back on his oral antibiotics and in the clear for about 3 weeks when the knee flared up again. God’s mercy continues to shine through as Tom again was able to receive daily IV antibiotics at home with the support of family. After 9 weeks of IV antibiotic treatment, the Dr. has advised it is in Toms best interest to proceed with knee replacement surgery as the knee will continue to flare up.
The Plan – Surgery on April 19th to remove current hardware, Prairie Lakes Rehab facility 6 – 8 weeks, daily IV Antibiotics with hopes of putting a new knee in after treatment, then back to Prairie Lakes to rehab to home! AMEN!
