My name is Tim Dayton and I live in Roanoke, Virginia. On February 19th, 2020 I went out to dinner with friends to celebrate my 65th birthday. That night I suffered severe stomach pains. Two months later and weighing 45 pounds less, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. I knew that it was serious when it only took three days for Social Security to qualify me for full disability. In the last twelve months we have worked with Oncology and taken advantage of all the Chemo and Radiation protocols that I qualified for, tried several surgeries, worked with a functional medicine doctor through special diets, supplements and IV’s. And now I am officially under Hospice care (they are great by the way), and all my medical costs are covered.
Thanks to the many of you who have reached out to ask how you can be supportive. My family is taking care of all my needs and wants. At this moment, I lack for nothing. I am aware that things will change quickly, and if you would like to provide a meal or other support, you’re welcome to give to my GoFundMe (this is different from the Tribute section; donations to Tributes go to Caring Bridge). We plan to use these donations to purchase meals or other items that can make life a bit simpler when my care becomes more intensive. If for some reason we don’t use the funds you give, we’ll donate them to the Day of Service that you can learn more about here: https://www.reachinroanokeva.org/dayofservice.html.
I have also loved receiving the many videos and stories you shared about how much I mean to you. Moving forward, I would like to make a similar but importantly different request. I would like for anyone who wishes to, to share a video of themselves describing a time that you and I were together in service to others, what it meant to you and how it’s continued to make a difference in your life. You can link them on this website so that we can all enjoy them as they are submitted, and we’ll also use them during the day of service. If you are struggling to post videos to this website, please see the separate journal post "How to share video messages".
I plan to update my journal on my health, among other things, at least once each week. I appreciate the chance to share with you all as I learn about myself during this phase of my life.
