Since we have so many people in different areas who want updates we decided to create this page, so everyone can receive updates from us as we get them. First, a brief history of the situation...
January 2014 – After experiencing unusual symptoms Tommy had an MRI performed. Doctors found a small mass that measures around 1.5cms. Because of the size and location of the mass the doctors originally diagnosed this as a Meningioma. In most cases, meningiomas are benign and grow at a slow rate. The size and location of the mass did not concern doctors, so they advised to sit back and monitor the mass to see if there is any growth.
2014-2015 – After a follow up MRI we met with a neurosurgeon in Kansas City that informed us that there was a small amount of growth in the mass. However, he was not concerned about the growth of the mass because it was nothing out of control. Again, they advised to continue monitoring the mass to make sure the growth is under control. Also, the exact diagnosis of the mass has still not been determined.
Fall 2016 – After experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, concentration difficulties, etc. we scheduled another follow up MRI. After the MRI, the radiologist reached out to the neurosurgeon and informed him that mass has doubled in size since the original diagnosis, so now measures around 3cm. Along with the growth, they found that the mass had a slight shift to a different area of the brain. Because of the uncertainty, the neurosurgeon suggested we perform a biopsy before proceeding with any sort of radiation treatment to shrink and stunt the growth of the mass. This biopsy will help give them a better understanding of what the mass is and determine future treatment plans.
At this time there is no procedure date scheduled for the biopsy, but we expect it to occur within the next few months. We will continue to post updates as we gather more information.
