On March 15, 2018 Kelly discovered a lump in her left breast. It felt like the time she had mastitis (a clogged duct or ducts in the breast causing fluids to back up) after Maxfield's birth in 2010. She went to the doctor the next day which led a a mammogram and then a PET scan which confirmed the presence of breast cancer. There is a large tumor in her breast and it has spread to her lymph, liver and bones. The cancer is estrogen receptor positive and HER 2 Negative. This means that the estrogen feeds the cancer and helps it spread. Kelly has stage 4 breast cancer.
The bad news is that right now it's incurable. The good news is that since it's the most common type of breast cancer there are many treatments for it and lots of resources going toward finding a cure.
On May 1, 2018 Kelly will have her ovaries and fallopian tubes surgically removed. This will reduce the greatest amount of estrogen and she will be receiving shots every month to eliminate all estrogen from her body. She will also be taking a chemo therapy in pill form. The oncologist has said that this treatment typically works for 1 to 2 years before the cancer mutates to resist the treatment. She will also be taking medicine to reinforce her bones since the chemo damages the bodies immune system and the bones that make the immune system. The only significant side effects will be the that produced by the onset of menopause.
Right now the best ways to help are to share words of encouragement, funny cards and messages and healing vibes and thoughts.
We will be needing other kinds of help and if you want to be on that list to lend a hand please leave your name and email. We will be putting up a site that lists the different types of help we need as things develop.
