April 2019 Ted Roers was hospitalized with Acute Liver Inflammation. The hospital conducted multiple tests, scans, and scoped to check bleeding around the liver. After receiving the test results, it became clear his body had advance stages of liver cirrhosis and health concerns. We didn’t know if he would even make it out of the hospital, but God is good and brought him back home to us.
We started the conversations of liver transplant due to the advanced liver cirrhosis. We initiated doctoring with the University of Minnesota due to closer location. When receiving a liver offer, arrival time at the hospital is within 6 hours.
August 2019 he was diagnosed with Liver Cancer. Because we were already in communication with UofM, we decided to start his chemo treatment through UofM.
April 2020 his cancer had advanced enough to proceed with treatment. In order to stay on the liver transplant list, the liver lesions must meet criteria guidelines. We closely monitored his cancer monthly with scans and blood work to remain on the liver transplant list.
February 2021 his cancer was treated the second time. UofM had two teams always discussing his health case files. The First team- transplant team. The Second team- cancer team. They constantly consulted together his case to determine the best course of treatment and future for the potential liver transplant.
May 2021 First liver offer.
We received a liver offer!!! The call we have all been eagerly waiting and praying for. Unfortunately, the liver ended up being non viable.
The UofM teams consulted and decided to schedule another round of cancer treatment to stay on the transplant criteria guidelines. Although the concern was keeping Ted healthy and strong vs treating the cancer, as each cancer treatment was becoming more difficult to recover from.
July 6th, 12:14am Second liver offer!!!! Drove to UofM for transplant.
July 7th, 5am the liver appeared great and was viable!!!! Surgery was a GO and started at 9:50am. The surgery will take about 6 hours, plus recovery time. We hopefully will have an update by this evening.
Prayers for a successful surgery, and transplant recovery road. As we have faith God will bring him back home to us once again, and get his quality of life back for many more years of memories together!
What a rollercoaster journey this has been! We are so thankful for all the prayers Ted and our family has received along the way! We are blessed at his second chance of life, and would like to thank the donor and his family for this gift of life!
We will be updating this site as we have more information.
Love and Prayers~ God Bless
