On December 10, 2016, James suffered a bike crash in Carlsbad, CA when an inattentive driver pulled out in front of him. As a result of the crash, he broke his right collarbone, fractured his hip socket, broke his pelvis in two places, received a contusion to his lung, and suffered trauma to his head. The day of the crash, he went to two hospitals, as the first was not properly equipped to handle his injuries. He had surgery on his collarbone the following day (12/11), and on December 15, moved to an acute inpatient rehab center in Encinitas, CA.
While it is expected that he will come home during the week of December 19th, he is a long way from being fully recovered and Karie is arranging for medical equipment such as a hospital bed to be set up in their home. In the coming weeks, Karie and James will need support including childcare, in-home visits with James, errands, pet care, meal delivery and more.
