Fili was diagnosed with myleodysplastic syndrome/leukemia in April 2016. The initial diagnosis was difficult to hear, but once we found out what Fili had and how we could beat it, the next year became a focus on how to get to the cure! Fili underwent multiple blood transfusions, many rounds of chemotherapy and bone marrow biopsies to follow his cancer cell levels. He was scheduled for stem cell transplant in November 2016, but unfortunately suffered a heart attack in October 2016, which pushed things back a bit. Fili underwent a procedure to re-open vessels providing blood to his heart in an attempt to reverse the effects of the heart attack. He has been followed by a cardiologist and taking medicine to help his heart recover. In February 2017, after running on a treadmill and undergoing other studies to look at his heart, he was cleared by the cardiologist for stem cell transplant. He spent the next few months "bulking up", eating a nutritious diet, walking and getting his body prepared for transplant. After meeting with the transplant doctors, the final approval for transplant was made and Fili is now being admitted to the hospital today, 3/29/17 to start the process!!! He will get a week of chemo and radiation before the transplant. Lauro (his youngest son) will donate his stem cells on Tuesday, 4/4/17 and if all goes well, those stem cells will be transplanted into Fili on Wednesday, 4/5/17. It will be a rough road with obstacles along the way, but with his good attitude, perseverance and support from friends and family, we can make this road to recovery and cure his cancer!
