Annika moved to Atlanta, GA with her boyfriend, Stephen, at the beginning of August to start her PhD program at Georgia Tech with the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences department. After a tumultuous few weeks in and out of hospitals, she was diagnosed with colon cancer that had spread to her liver. Almost immediately, she went into surgery, which was successful and removed all the cancerous tumors from her abdomen. This news means she has a good prognosis and a good start for the chemotherapy. The recovery from the surgery, and the subsequent ostomy, has been a slow process and a learning experience. Over the next year she will begin and go through intensive chemotherapy, while remaining in Atlanta to continue research and do what she can manage to keep her PhD on track. We will keep you updated here!
