Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. On Monday August 29 around 5:20pm Tayla was playing outside and got ahold of a bottle of tiki tourch fluid and ingested a few ounces. After she did this her big brother ran and grabbed the bottle away but unfortunately it was too late. Tayla was brought in to the house by my mom and Rylan, I could tell something wasn't right by the way she was crying. Upon hearing what had happened and seeing Tayla coughing, crying, and vomitting up the oil we quickly got in the vehicle and rushed to RC hospital in Olivia.
To be honest I never imagined while we were driving to the hospital that things would be this serious. After she was evaluated in the ER at Olivia, it was determined she would need to be intubated and sent by air to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. After a 30 minute helicopter ride (which thankfully I got to ride along) we were at children's between 8p and 830p. When we got there I still thought we would probably only need to be there a day and that this was just all crazy, and no way it should be happening to us. That first night she got a central line placed for ease with the ivs and blood draws and so that she could avoid lots of pokes. She also got a foley placed and they have been giving her lasix to help her pee better. Right now she continues to need to get rid of the torch fluid and her lungs need to grow back the protein and fats that were shriveled up by the tiki tourch fluid. She is doing well on the vent but her CO2 continues to rise so she continues to require more and more support from the ventilator. Right now her prognosis is still good but only time will tell how long she needs to stay on the vent. My personal goal is that they can start weaning her off of it by Friday but to be honest I thought we would be here only 1 day so I have come to the realization that I really have absolutely no control over any of this situation. We appreciate your support and words of hope/encouragement and thoughts and prayers as we continue on with this journey.
