Welcome to Taola's Caring Bridge website. On Sunday Tuesday 16th 2020 Taola was involved in a tragic motorcycle accident. She was riding as a passenger when the bike, for unknown reasons, left the road and went through the ditch. At some point Taola was thrown 30 feet in the air from the bike and was not wearing a helmet. She landed on the right side of her body and sustained a broken neck and back that also resulted in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Taola was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul MN. Where she underwent many procedures to stop the multiple brain bleeds. At this time (6/18/20) she is in a medically induced coma to assist her care team in stabilizing the initial injuries. Her care team of doctors, surgeons, and nurses report to us that she is showing very positive signs. Her left side has been responsive to reflex stimulation but due to the brain swelling and trauma to the right side she is not responding yet to reflex stimulation on the right side (which is typical in these types of injuries as the body works through inflammation and trauma). Her care team plans on reducing her coma medications over the next few days to be able to start full assessment of Taola's capacity to be awake.
At this time, due to COVID-19, Tami is unable to be at the hospital with Taola and can only receive updates and help make medical decisions via phone calls. We ask that communication to the family occurs on this site only. Unless you are personally contacted by them as we need to help keep Tami's phone free for Taola's care coordination. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement and encourage you to make posts to Taola in here as well as on her facebook page. If you can text her videos she can hear or record videos of you talking to her that may be useful in the upcoming weeks as she moves through each stage of recovery that would be so wonderful. We might not be able to be there in person but she can hear us through our videos when able. Prayer is huge and we need continued prayer for not only Taola but for Tami as well as all of Taola's medical providers.
The next steps of her recovery are unclear at this point but what is very clear is that her journey to recovery will be full of appointments, therapies, medical providers, doctor's offices, possible home renovations, medical supplies, vehicle adaptations, and life altering changes. We have started a go fund me page that is linked to this site to start the process as soon as she is able. Any ability to contribute at this point would be such a blessing to Taola and her family. In the weeks to come we will find out more about the needs outside of financial and will update the site with a planner and possible meal train (if necessary). Thank you so much from the whole family for visiting Taola's site and for caring about this amazing, sweet, caring, wonderful, adventurous, loving, beautiful, determined, and strong young woman.
