(Updated April 2019)

In September of 2016, Sylvia had "cold and flu" type symptoms, as many around her did, so she didn't think much of it. The cough she acquired from this sickness continued to linger on for a few months. With the urging of family and friends, Sylvia made a doctor's appointment to get it checked out. Friday, January 27, 2017, during the doctor's exam, he felt a mass near her liver and ordered a sonogram, which was done immediately. During the exam, the radiologist found several masses on her liver. With this news, Sylvia and Brett met with the general practice doctor on Saturday morning. Blood work was done, but other tests, including a full body CT scan and referrals would not be scheduled until Monday morning.

On Saturday evening, January 28, 2017, Sylvia was feeling weak and having abdominal pain and began vomiting. Brett thought it best to take Sylvia to the ER. Once there, a CT scan was ordered. While waiting for the CT scan, they did a chest x-ray and found three nodules on Sylvia's lungs. An hour later, the CT scan revealed lesions in her colon, and shortly after, advanced stage colon cancer was diagnosed with the possibility of having metastasized to the lungs and liver.

As you can see, this all happened in about 30 hours - from the time Sylvia went to the doctor for a cough, to being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. This has been difficult for all to process. In the midst of this, Sylvia and Brett love and trust Jesus Christ with Sylvia's life and the care of their family. They believe God is bigger than cancer and He will guide them through this time.
