I decided to use the CaringBridge website as a single place to keep interested family and friends updated on our journey. In addition, I also want to use my experience and this site to spread awareness about DENSE BREAST TISSUE. Are you (or someone you know) dense? If so, visit
https://www.areyoudense.org/ (it may say "page not found" but if you click "back to home" it will take you there) to learn more about the increased risk for breast cancer and the need for additional imaging (ultrasound or MRI) because mammograms only detects 48% of cancer in women with extremely dense breasts.
I feel somewhat betrayed by the medical community because I have been getting annual mammograms since I turned 40 and while I have been told off and on over the years that I have "dense breasts" not once did any of my healthcare professionals advise me of my increased risk for breast cancer because of this OR the need for additional imaging above/beyond mammography (including 3D). I just had another "all clear" mammogram in May 2018 (3D this time) so I was quite surprised to get this news in November. I now realize it's up to us to advocate for ourselves and each other AND to help educate our medical professionals that mammograms, alone, are not sufficient for women with dense breasts.
Thank you for visiting! We appreciate your support!
