Susan was diagnosed with Stage IIB Triple Negative Invasive Ductal Carcinoma on May 11, 2022.  The cancer was discovered by a routine mammogram appointment.  Triple Negative Breast cancer represents 15% of all breast cancers and is more difficult to treat because it does not respond to hormones or the HERS protein for which specific treatments are available.  It typically occurs in women under 40, of African-American descent, and those that have the BRCA1 mutation.  The standard treatment for triple negative breast cancer is 5 months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, followed by surgery to remove the tumors, and then radiation.   After consultations with doctors at Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion (Spectrum Health) and Lacks Cancer Center (Mercy Health), Susan will be receiving treatment at Lacks Cancer Center.   Susan is also working  with a naturopath to have a more integrative approach to cancer treatment. 

My favorite Bible verse is I Thessalonians 5:18 "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."  It may seem difficult to give thanks at this time but I am thankful that the cancer was found as early as it was.  I am thankful for the individuals who made calls on my behalf to get a second opinion appointment.  I am thankful that I was able to get an appointment with a naturopath within two days when it normally takes one to two months.  I am thankful for my boss who has been so kind and flexible with my work schedule.  I am thankful for the wonderful family and friends who are lifting me up in prayer, providing meals, and offers to help.  I am blessed.
