On June 9th, Susan was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
She will be undergoing surgery on Friday, July 14th, 2017 at Duke University Medical Center. She is very thankful to the Doctors here in Wilson, Charlotte, and Duke that have helped her through testing and procedures to find this diagnosis quickly as it has been a shock to us all. It has nothing to do with her previous breast cancer she is a survivor of that was in 2013.
She had abrupt unusual onset of abdominal pain around May 20th, and sought medical treatment quickly, as she has been in excellent health. The tumor around her bile duct is 2cms and relatively small and contained to this one spot. She will be having the Whipple surgery to remove the tumor which is very involved with numerous organs and a serious surgery. At this time, her doctors believe the tumor has not metastasized to any other organs or lymph nodes. She is expected to be in surgery for 5-7 hours and will remain in the hospital potentially for a week post-op. We will keep this site updated as she is recovering to keep everyone informed of her recovery and prognosis. We expect for chemo and radiation to follow several weeks after her recovery. The family appreciates everyone's prayers and concerns during this difficult time. She will be spending the next two weeks with family prior to her surgery and welcomes any notes or messages of support.
