Update from Ben:
Susan is scheduled to have her colon removed February 2, 2017 at UNC, Chapel Hill. You can visit this website for updates.
History: About three-and-a-half years ago, Susan had a flare-up of Ulcerative Colitis. A previous three-month flare-up in 2009 had been awful, but this one never went away, and the symptoms just got progressively worse over time. UC is an auto-immune disease, so her body is essentially attacking the colon constantly. It's been a rough ride. She's tried every medical cocktail the doctors could come up with; we've tried alternative approaches; we've listened to every suggestion from 1000 people; and her symptoms just got worse. The disease has essentially touched every aspect of life, and it was a difficult decision for her to have the surgery that would remove her colon. However, everyone who loves her is looking forward to getting her back to her normal, loving, active, nurturing, fun self.
This is a major surgery, and there are some unknowns- so far as recovery time. Susan will likely be in the hospital at UNC until around February 10, and then recovering at home. We are uncertain of exactly what to expect during the time following surgery, and the adjustment to follow. This website will allow us to update you regularly without having to explain everything 100 times to different people. We appreciate your prayers and support!
I will be providing updates regularly through this website. But please don't call until after February 16.
