As many of you friends/family of Tina know, she and Joey went to Thailand to visit Alec and tour the country. A few days ago (3/21), they visited an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Tina, Joey, Alec, Alec's girlfriend, and Alec's girlfriend's mother were all together and returning from this sanctuary. They were being transported by a tour company in the back of a safari-type truck. The road was mountainous and winding and the driver lost control of the truck, crashing into a ravine below. Everyone was injured in one way or another, but Tina's injuries were among the most serious. She has a fractured pelvis, broken nose, broken finger, and leg lacerations. Her fractured pelvis is the most problematic of her injuries, and she will be undergoing surgery to stabilize it. This surgery is planned for 3/26.

It is bad enough that our dear friend/family member/mom/daughter/sister is hurt, but all is made especially difficult when she is so far away from us. Alec is taking good care of his mom, Joey's father flew to Thailand to bring Joey back to St. Louis, and Laura Murer is on her way to provide support and medical advocacy immediately following Tina's surgery. Tina's sisters will follow later to care for her during whatever convalescence period is needed before she can travel and then accompany her home. It is very possible Tina will require air ambulance/med evac transport back to the U.S.
