Ty Westendorf Stronger Than AML

Welcome to our Caring Bridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Ty was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, AML.
It started right before November 6, 2021, when he thought he was getting sick with a cold and sore throat.  He had gone to the doctor and was given an antibiotic. On Saturday the 6th, instead of going out for hunting for deer opener, he spent the weekend at home as the pain in his throat got worse and he developed pain in his teeth. By Monday morning, he needed to see a dentist, and the dentist performed a root canal hoping that would help subside the pain in his teeth and throat. With pain continuing over the next couple days and not improving, he went back to the doctor and dentist multiple times hoping to figure out why his throat pain wasn't getting better. Ty continued to try different antibiotics with no change.  The pain in his throat had become so painful that he had been unable to eat anything.  On Saturday November 13, he went to urgent care, where he had lab work done and was sent to the ER to be admitted to the hospital. With his WBC in the 60s and other lab results abnormal, he needed to be monitored and run further testing. On Monday morning November 15th, he was transferred to Sioux Falls for further testing where we were told of the possibility that this could be something much more serious than we had  envisioned.  The next couple days was a waiting game, waiting for preliminary results and a bone marrow biopsy done Tuesday morning. Wednesday afternoon, the Oncologist confirmed that he had AML and the rest of his results would tell them more on how to treat his cancer. As we continue to get more definitive answers and fight this journey head on, this page will be used to keep family and friends updated.

We know that the road ahead could be a long one, but Ty is strong, determined, and ready to kick this in the butt! We appreciate your thoughts, prayers and continued support through this fight.
