Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most.

On Tuesday, May 10, Steven had an accident while descending Flagstaff in Boulder, Colorado on his bike.  We think he hit a pothole and went over his handlebars.  He was riding at a very high speed and hit the pavement hard, landing on his head.  Fortunately there was a witness and an ambulance was called right away, and he was transported to Boulder Community Hospital. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and has remained there in critical condition.

Steven sustained a significant injury to his brain.  He is in a coma, has an intercranial pressure monitor measuring the pressure in his brain, and is on a ventilator. Scans show bleeding and swelling in multiple areas in his brain.  Amazingly, other than road rash, a laceration above his left eye, and small fractures in the bones around his eye, the rest of his body is okay.

Nancy got to the hospital soon after the accident. Mike was in Morocco at the time of the accident but was able to get to Boulder the next day.  Nancy and Mike have been at Steven's bedside continuously.

To help Steven's brain heal, he needs to have the least stimulation possible.  At this time, he cannot have visitors.  The medical team wants him to rest quietly for the next few days. We will keep you posted regarding when it is okay to visit.  In the meantime, please leave messages here and send your positive thoughts and prayers.

Nancy has been posting updates on her Facebook that are being added to this journal.
