Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

The evening of January 8th, Steve and I had dinner at the Thai Pavillion at Rockville Town Square..  It was the night of the horrible ice storm.   We were walking to CVS  and Steve slipped and fell hitting his head --- He lost consciousness.  Steve came to just before the arrival of the EMT personnel; they were slipping on the walkway also and called the maintenance man over to treat the sidewalks.   Steve was transported to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Emergency.  The Emergency Room staff did there "job" and by 11 PM, after reviewing the CT scan, they decided to keep him overnight for observation.  They told us he had fractured his skull and had a small brain bleed.  Steve was getting his bearings and was able to recall  name, date, age etc, during this time.

Ovenight his brain bleed grew worse.  Steve was admitted to the ICU.  He was intubated for his safety and his breathing was controlled by a ventilator.  He was heavily sedated and other medications, treatments and diagnostics, were administered.  They kept him heavily sedated.  Brain swelling became a serious concern.   Three CT scans later -- the brain bleed had stabilized.  Emergency surgery to relieve pressure had been avoided.

Then next several days Steve was monitored and treated in ICU.  He was kept heavily sedated except for intermittent testing for neurological function, i.e., he would be taken off sedation medication long enough to see whether he was able to respond to commands.  Eventually, Steve did respond.  His responses were subtle and intermittent.  On January 14 he was extubated and taken off the ventilator.   Steve is still in the ICU as his neurological testing, evaluations, and treatment continues.
