On 10/31 Steve started to show symptoms and tested positive for COVID on 11/2 ironically, the same day he was supposed to get his vaccine. On 11/8 when the paramedics got to him, his oxygen level was at 58%; Steve was still standing in fact, he choose to walk to the ambulance instead of getting on the stretcher. I was on speakerphone with the paramedics and they were shocked that he was standing upright. He was taken to HCMC and was was quickly intubated.
He has remained intubated, in a medical induced coma. He originally suffered an acute kidney injury which his kidneys have thankfully started to recover over the last several days however, his lungs are needing more time to heal.
He qualified for 2 national trials, both out of Vanderbilt University. The first trial is called the Nector trial, a blind trial where he would either be given the drug or a placebo. We will not know for 90 days what he received which the hope is that he received the drug to help his lungs. The 2nd trial is a blood thinner trial. The lung trial ran for 5 days and the blood thinner trial runs for 14 days; both of these trials started on 11/10. He is being treated with the antibodies treatment, a steroid and an antibiotic.
He is in a very tenuous position but, we know Steve is a fighter and loves Cal and Addie more than anything and has much more to do in this world! He just needs time to heal and his team is doing everything they can to fight for Steve.
Our prayers and love are with Steve every minute of the day as we cannot see or be with him due to COVID. Our prayers are with Cal and Addie as they are missing him and so are we!
