The journey to a healthy heart begins today. Steve has been struggling with pulmonary hypertension and heart failure for quite a while. Multiple attempts to control it with medication have been unsuccessful in the long term, and recent testing wasn't good. His cardiologist, Dr. Franko, is almost 100% certain that his mitral valve stenosis from a previous heart surgery is the cause of the hypertension, so replacement is the only option. We saw Dr. Kilic, cardiovascular surgeon, last week, so Steve is on his way! Here we are the Ross Heart Hospital at THE OSU. Vein mapping was done this morning by ultrasound, in case they need to do a bypass as well as valve replacement. Now he is getting several hours of IV fluid therapy to help prevent damage to his kidneys from the cardiac catheterization which is scheduled for 1 pm. We're anticipating a long afternoon and evening. Tomorrow will be a day off for sleep and relaxation, and surgery is scheduled for 7 am on Friday.
