Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Early in 2016, after the death of her mother, Starr began having an indication that something was just not right with her health.  After many doctor visits and tests, she was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer.  From the very first day of her diagnosis she has shown amazing courage and determination.  She endured several months of radiation and chemo, with horrific side effects.  On August 8, 2016 she had surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible.  After an extensive recovery time at home, with more chemo, she faced her next challenge.  On October 22, 2016 she was rushed to the hospital with a compression fracture in her spine.  The cancer had spread to her lower spine area, and was making it difficult to walk and causing great pain.  Surgery was performed the next day, again removing as much of the tumor as possible and placing a twelve inch rod in her back to support her spine.  After a week in the hospital, she was moved to Siskin Rehab Hospital in Chattanooga.  She has spent the last two months there, working very hard to try to regain the use of her legs (with an additional hospital visit to remove stones from her bladder).  Last Friday, the day before Christmas Eve, we brought her home, not on hospice, but to continue her battle with the same amazing courage and determination with which she began the fight for her life.  She and Sonny are a team and she lives every day with a contagious positive attitude.  She is currently starting another round of chemo (every other week), and doing physical therapy every day.
As much as she loves hearing from friends and family, answering phone calls and texts is sometimes too taxing on her limited energy.  Therefore, I (her sister Tena) will attempt to keep everyone up to date on her progress.  Please feel free to send her love and friendship on this website.
We believe in a God of miracles, and Starr's faith is her most steadfast companion.    Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
