Shirley was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer on May 19, 2016. Stage 4 indicates that her cancer has spread to other areas of her body. A routine 3-month checkup with her pulmonologist indicated that a spot on her lung had increased in size. A biopsy of the spot indicated cancer. A PET scan revealed "light up" areas in her spine (shoulder height), lung, rectum and a lymph node near the colon. It has been determined that Shirley's cancer is a reoccurrence of her colon cancer from Sept. 2014. She was diagnosed with breast cancer just prior to her 2014 colon cancer for which she takes a chemo pill.
The Tumor Team will be meeting during the week of June 6th to discuss options for treatment.
For the past week, Shirley has been experiencing abdominal pain that extends around her side to her back. Pain management has not been very successful. Three trips to the ER for IV pain meds, blood work and CAT scans have not revealed a reason for her pain. Very discouraging for her.
Shirley will turn 80 on June 23. She lives in Worthington with her husband, Frank. They have 3 children-Mike, Al and Cindy, 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
