Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Early in May, Shirley was admitted to the university hospital in Albuquerque with a diagnosis of acute myelogenous leukemia (aml).
Our family met together with her oncology team and decided she would do a treatment plan that included 5 days of chemotherapy in the hospital, then an additional 2-3 weeks to monitor her progress.
After doing quite well with the chemo, she had a consult with ENT about ongoing sinus problems. The ENT team found that she had a fungal infection in her sinuses. This led to 3 surgeries in 3 days, and a steep decline in her overall wellbeing and comfort. Before the surgeries Shirley was able to feed herself, take short walks and have daily showers, and talk comfortably on the phone with friends and family. After the surgeries and time in the ICU, Shirley was confined to her bed, with her nose packed and an oxygen mask so she could breathe through her mouth. Shirley and Tom made the decision to discontinue the surgical treatment for the fungal infection, and work toward getting hospice care.
On Saturday, June 4, Shirley was discharged from the hospital and went home. She is now receiving hospice services and has a trained caretaker with her round the clock to assist with personal care tasks as needed. Her family team consists of Tom and her children (Mary and Dave), who are taking turns being with her during the day. Shirley is more comfortable at home but continues to need an oxygen mask to breath, which makes her mouth very dry and also makes it harder to talk well.

At this time Shirley welcomes cards and notes, and reads texts and emails sent to her phone or to Tom. She is enjoying short visits with friends and family, but these should be scheduled with Tom first to see how she is feeling on a particular day.
