April 1st, 2016... The day our boat was rocked!! Mom had been experiencing some "female issues" for a short period of time and had gone to her doctor. After some routine testing, she was sent to an OBGYN for further evaluation in Aberdeen SD. This doctor then referred mom to Sioux Falls SD to a Gynecologic Oncologist, Dr. Rojas. After testing and testing and scanning and scanning it has been confirmed that mother has stage 2a cervical cancer. She will be undergoing 25 consecutive (weekends off) external high dose radiation therapy along with 5 chemo treatments over the course of 5 weeks. Upon completion of the external radiation she will then have 5 doses of interstitial brachytherapy which is internal radiation.  I will save the barbaric details and let you do your own research on this type of treatment. The only place in SD for this form of treatment is in Sioux Falls. They have housing right across the street from the Avera McKennan Cancer Institute where we will be staying for the first 5 weeks. We will do our best to update this site daily so all of family members and friends can stay in the loop. 

Our boat may have been rocked, but our mother saved it from tipping!! She is the strongest person we know!! She has been through quite a bit already and has the absolute best attitude to fight this. Please keep mom in your thoughts as we enter this next phase of her journey right along side of her!
