Yes, I can't f**ing believe my sister has cancer!

Sharon had a colonoscopy on September 23rd and was diagnosed with colon cancer (adenocarcinoma for you medical types). She was having symptoms but never imagined it would be cancer, so this is a big shock to all of us. She was referred to Swedish Medical Center Cancer Center in Seattle and has a wonderful doctor, Dr. Bastawrous. He's not only a highly experienced surgeon and a real expert in this area, but he also turns out to be extremely kind and compassionate. Sharon feels very fortunate to have found him. She also has a really great nurse navigator, Deb Cadiente, a colon cancer survivor who is really caring and VERY smart. And best of all, Patty Creed and Marilyn Beech (Sharon's dear friends who live in the Seattle area) have come to every meeting and helped in so many ways. Also Carolyn and Mike, who live in Bellingham, have been taking care of Sashi and being very loving and supportive.

So, the next steps will be to get another MRI on Monday to make a decision about staging the cancer. Based on the findings, the cancer doctors will decide on the next steps. Sharon meets with the radiation oncologist and colon cancer oncologist.

As soon as all the medical stuff is done this week, Sharon is hopping on a plane and going to Monterey, CA, to meet up with her new friend. She will get to see Jeff and they plan to have some beach time and then head to the wine country (Nothing like a little Sonoma Chardonnay to life the spirits!). Then, up the coast and back to Seattle for care.

I plan to come out to help Sharon as soon as I am needed. She is going to need a lot of love and support and care, and I want to be with her for this.

Once she is done with all this cancer shit, we are taking a trip to Holbox Island in Mexico, where we will drink Margaritas, eat guacamole, and swim with the whale sharks. Anyone that wants to join us is welcome. Dates TBA.
