My son Sean's initial X-ray at his pediatrician then MRI at Providence escalated to more tests at OHSU. It was confirmed that the swelling below his knee is caused by a malignant tumor. He has bone cancer. Specifically Osteosarcoma. A 10 week schedule of chemotherapy was started immediately and surgery to repair the damage is planned to follow. During the chemotherapy port placement surgery, 2 more biopsies where performed at sites deemed suspicious in a bone scan. They tested positive. Osteosarcoma has been found in 3 locations: right tibia, left femur, and pelvis which places the cancer at stage 4.
6 months ago I had to give him the devastating news that his mother, my wife, was killed in a car accident. I wasn't sure Sean would forgive me for doing it again so soon. He wiped the tears from my cheek and comforted me. Kids are amazing!
He is in excellent hands at OHSU’s Doernbecher Children's Hospital. We are lucky to live within commuting distance of such an amazing resource. We are also lucky to have such loving and supportive friends and family. Sean has a tough road ahead but the talented people at OHSU are going to cure him and we will make it through together.
