Labor Day weekend 2017, Ruth experienced a TIA (mini stroke). However, as the weeks went on, she began developing other symptoms that became unlike a stroke. Ruth had numerous appointments and tests first in Fargo, then in Mesa, AZ when she moved there to her winter home. Then over Christmas, she went to Virginia Beach, VA, where her symptoms worsened where she was hospitalized with more tests as well.  Ruth flew back to Mesa, however, it was determined that consistent and more care was needed back at home in Fargo/Moorhead. With the team work of Ruth's "kids" and friends, everything was coordinated where her home was packed up, Rob and Jeff drove her van back to Moorhead; friend Judie flew back to Fargo with Ruth, friend Clara stayed with her at her Mesa home and an ambulance was arranged to pick Ruth up at the airport, Saturday January 27th.  More tests were taken and a medication of two meds were administered to rule out a diagnosis by taking the combination medications of Mestinon and Robinul. If her slurred speech had improved with those medications, then her Motor Neuron Disease could have been manageable, however, there was no improvement.  Ruth was officially diagnosed after MRI's, blood tests, and a EMG test where ALS was confirmed.
