I am heading to the Cleveland Clinic on Saturday, May 13, where I will have my ascending aortic aneurysm repaired on May 18th. The aneurysm was discovered during my annual checkup on my 26 year old St Jude artificial aortic valve. After two surgical consultations here in Phoenix; a real heart to heart discussion with two of my golf buddies, Dr. John McGillen and Dr. Don Pochyly,; a very thoughtful ongoing discussion with our dear friend Nancy Berg NP, and a looooong talk with Annell the decision was made to go to a "high volume heart hospital" for care. We choose the Cleveland Clinic based on their long history of high quality heart care. We found on their website they have a whole department just of the aorta. They do over 1500 aortic surgery a year. That qualifies as "high volume" in my book.
