On April 8 Robert went into the hospital to have pain in his right side assessed. He was told it was a cyst and to come back the following day to talk to s surgeon about having it removed. On April 9th he was told it was not a cyst and was showing characteristics of cancer and they were flying Jim to Edmonton right away. And from there our life changed drastically - by Tuesday Robert was diagnosed with Stage 4 Kidney Cancer with a tumor about 16cm in diameter. The Cancer had already metastasized (spread) through the largest vein in a persons body - the vena cava vein and had also spread to his heart where a second tumor was growing, which was also encased by a nasty & large blood clot. They have also found spots on his liver and lung but it'll be at least 2 months before they can do more scans to even look at that. Step 1 was surgery! Luckily Robert was a good candidate for surgery and it was promptly scheduled for Friday, April 14th. Unfortunately his surgery was bumped due to the OR getting in 2 transplants that morning. He was bumped again on Saturday and finally on Easter Sunday Robert went in for surgery. After 11hrs of surgery, the right kidney and attached tumor was removed, along with the thrombus and second tumor in his heart. The Cancer had spread to the top layer of the right atrial of the heart and so he had to receive a graft to repair that. Today is April 22nd, 5 days post surgery. Robert spent three days in ICU and is now recovering well and is in the Cardiology ward. I will post updates as often as possible. Please pray for a full recovering and strength.
