Our dad is currently battling a third reoccurrence of a sarcoma in his thigh. He has been diagnosed with a Stage 3 high-grade Myxoid liposarcoma which is a malignant tumor. It is a subtype of liposarcoma and is frequently located in the deeper layers of soft tissue of the arms and legs such as the thigh. Because this is the third reoccurrence of the sarcoma in essentially the same location the first option given to him was complete amputation of his leg from the hip down. For obvious reasons we sought a second opinion and were fortunate enough to be connected to Dr. Krista Weber, the Chief Orthopedic Oncologist / Surgeon and Director of the Sarcoma Program at the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center. We met with Dr. Weber who is incredibly talented and has a great bed-side manner. She understood our dad's wish not to have his leg amputated and agreed to an aggressive course of proton therapy radiation followed by surgery to remove the tumor. Dad will begin his radiation treatments on April 12th and continue Monday-Friday for 25 days. He will then need to give his leg / body 3 weeks to recover followed by surgery. We have been advised that a third reoccurrence of this type of sarcoma is very serious and the cancer is very aggressive so we know dad is going to have a tough fight ahead of him, but he is ready to take this battle on with the love and support of his family and friends. Through Caroline's connections working at Penn Medicine we have been put in touch with the best treating physicians for this form of cancer in the world with the best treatment options available, we consider this a true blessing. Also, we are praying especially hard to Saint Padre Pio and encourage you to join us in these prayers for our dad and for all those who suffer.
