FYI: Bob's birthday is February 6th - if you are a card sending type, please do remember him. Thanks! From Bob: I have been determined to be a candidate for what is called the Argus II Retinal implant. You can look it up online to get more info, but in short, they plan on implanting a chip in my eye. I will wear a pair of glasses with a camera, and a box on my belt to receive the image from the camera and send it to the implant, allowing me to see objects. It is expected to be not very defined but fairly functional.
I will be updating periodically with the help of others, and I hope that you will register on the website here for the updates (via email and/or text) right when they happen.
I am waiting for appointments to begin at Mayo. First step is to have my eye measured, and have the cataracts removed. Basically my eye needs to be large enough to house the implant. I don't think that will be a problem. After that, they will implant a chip into my eye. That's an outpatient procedure.
