As most of you know, Rick was diagnosed with an ugly neurological disease in 2015, although he had symptoms several years prior. The disease called progressive supranuclear palsy (psp) impacts balance, speech, swallow, and overall mobility. There is not a known cause or cure. It is also a difficult disease to predict as although progressive, it does not have a set course. Stages can last a short time or multiple years. More info on the disease can be found on the curepsp website.
So, how are things going into 2018. First of all, you can’t visualize a more positive and upbeat person than Rick in this ugly battle. He will tell you that psp is kicking his but and at the same time tell you he is great. (Although once in a while he tells me to take a nice pill.). He and Ike our dachshund are now best buds.....that took a while! We are mainly staying in Gulf Shores and living life as full as possible with a new normal and some everyday challenges! Rick gets out some but is mainly home bound due to both extreme fatigue and mobility challenges. We have good support from friends and neighbors along with hospice. As Rick is not very techie, I though this would be a good way to provide updates and for friends to send messages of support.
