Welcome to our CaringBridge website. Colleen is helping me to use it to keep family and friends updated in one place. Colleen:  As many of you know, in February 2021 Rhonda was diagnosed with Hepatocellar (liver cancer) Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer).  She was started on a palliative regimen for this cancer, with the goal of reducing, not eradicating, the tumors, that were deemed inoperable. As her care needs increased, she made the difficult decision to leave her beloved Florida of 14 years.  With the help of our Mom, and myself (Colleen), we helped her move in April, to Arizona to live with her son, Nick and his wife, Kim, and their 2 daughters. This meant leaving her other son, Alec, and his daughter, Layla, who remain in Florida. Fortunately, Alec and Layla have been able to make some very fun trips to Arizona to see all the family and create more loving memories.
When she could no longer tolerate the chemotherapy, she was offered a new chemotherapy that involved participating in a study trial. She tolerated this for 8 weeks, getting some relief from her pain. On July 12th, her imaging and lab results revealed worsening disease with increased growth of tumors and spread(metastasis) to other areas of her body. The week prior, her results had revealed some brain and bone involvement, and then a couple days later, she suffered a mild stroke. The recommendation by her Oncologist was to end the study drug, and to pursue comfort care.
