Randy Slagter

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.  As many of you know, Randy was diagnosed with FSGS kidney disease in 2015.  After several failed attempts to put his disease into remission at his local clinic, Randy was referred to Mayo for further evaluation.  While being hospitalized at Mayo after a kidney biopsy, complications arose.  After Randy spent a week in the ICU undergoing several surgeries, and 130 days in the hospital, he was discharged with no effective treatment for his disease.  After spending a year at home, and receiving dialysis 4 times a week, Randy had yet another set back.  Due to seizures caused by long-term medication use for his disease, he spent the first month of 2017 in St. Cloud Hospital.  Randy continued on dialysis until he was once again referred to Mayo for a transplant evaluation in July 2017.  After being cleared for a kidney transplant, Randy was told he would need a living donor.  He received a phone call from Mayo stating that they had found a match, who he later found out was his cousin, Todd Slagter.  Even though a matching donor was found, doctors wanted Randy to increase his strength before a transplant could be done.  When the doctors felt Randy was strong enough to undergo the surgery, they cleared him for the transplant.  Words cannot express how thankful we are to Todd for his selfless gift of life.  The transplant is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26, 2018.
